How to hook up a HEI to a V8?

I put an HEI in my 57 GMC V8 years ago. Easy to do and works well. Assuming it is an early HEI (pre-computer with only two connections) one connection is tach output and the other is +12V. Looking down from the top the tach connection is clockwise from the +12V connection. The 12V feed needs to be fairly hefty. I ran mine through 10 gauge wire.

How do you wire a tach to a Hei?

Make up a 12 gauge wire with an in-line 20 amp fuse. Connect that wire from the ignition switch directly to the BAT position on the HEI. You do not have to connect anything to the TACH position, but if you want a tach, most semi-modern tachs (like my Sun Super Tach III) work just fine when connected to the TACH output.

How do you wire a 12 gauge fuse to a Hei?

The easiest way to do it (and the way I did mine) is to find a connection on the back side of the ignition switch that has 12V when the key is in the start AND in the run position. Make up a 12 gauge wire with an in-line 20 amp fuse. Connect that wire from the ignition switch directly to the BAT position on the HEI.

How reliable is a Hei module?

An HEI is a reliable source of good spark, however when it dies, it dies in a hurry, not slowly like points-based ignition. I now (after a $65 tow charge in the middle of the night) keep a spare module (less that $20), a 1/4 nut driver and a flat blade screwdriver under the seat.

How do you test the HEI system?

Star with ignition as it is easier to troubleshoot (IMHO) If you are running HEI distributor, have module tested. If running points, examine them carefully and replace points and condenser as needed. For fuel system, use gauge to test fuel pressure.

How good is the HEI?

The HEI was rebuilt by suntuned many moons ago, it works great. Im using a stock cap/coil, and have used assorted HEI modules. Ive been through at least 4-5 modules over the past 5 years. Basically, things work great until one day the car wont start.

How many amps does the HEI module have?

Its a 6 amp version ( delco is 5.5 amps). Most of the hei modules failure is from bad ground or a high voltage strike etc. Gotta have a good ground, plenty of heat isolation grease on the back plate and good ign cables. The speedway module is half the price of most as well..

What does a performance module do on a Hei?

The HEI performs this dwell time electronically and can increase the dwell time at high engine speeds to effectively improve a coil’s performance by ensuring adequate coil saturation. While a good performance module will make a big difference in a stock HEI, matching it with a performance coil allows the system to work as efficiently as possible.
